Rail Car That Once Carried President To Greenbrier, In Clifton Forge Wednesday

Wednesday, an historic rail car is expected to roll in to Clifton Forge. Chessie 29 is an 85 foot long vintage rail passenger car. It’s being transported to the C&OHS’s Heritage Center museum in Clifton Forge. The car is called a “Cold War Soldier” as it transported President Dwight D. Eisenhower to the Greenbrier Hotel at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia in May 1956. Chessie 29 was built in 1950 and converted for C&O President Tuohy’s use in 1951. He used the car as his “rolling office” until his death in 1966.

Snyder Out As Greenbrier Valley Airport Manager

Greenbrier Valley Airport Manager Stephen Snyder was removed from his post this week at the tail end of a meeting of the Airport Authority. A roll call vote indicates that Deborah Phillips, Greg Furlong and Tammy Shifflett-Tincher voted in favor of removal, Chairman Lowell Johnson and Mike Rose were opposed. Martha Livesay was appointed as acting executive direcotr in Snyder’s place. Snyder thinks that accusations of overspending at the airport played a role in his removal. Snyder’s removal is effective immediately.

Shooting Suspect Turns Himself In, Victim On Life Support

The shooting of a Greenbrier East High School student at Dorie Miller Park on Friday is being described as accidental by those who saw what happened. Edward Smith-Allen was reportedly playing around and pointing a gun at people in a car. Some in the car got out. As Smith-Allen pointed the gun at the victim he pulled the trigger and it went off. The suspect turned himself into police Saturday night and is charged with Wanton Endangerment with a Firearm. He was released on a $5,000 bond. The victim is on life support.

Soft Opening Monday For New Rainelle Post Office

A soft opening Monday for the newly remodedled post office in Rainelle. The old one was damaged by the 2016 floods and there have been multiple jumps between temporary locations since. The grand opening for the new facility is June 27th. It’s on John Raine Drive and with the soft opening looming, the temporary post office location at the Park Center will close at noon on Saturday, June 8, and will mark the beginning of the moving process to the new building.

Investigation Into Monday Afternoon House Fire In Fairlea

They’re looking for a cause after a fire at ahome in Farilea Monday afternoon, The call came in just after 5pm about a residence on Phyllis Ann Drive. There was one person in the home at the time of the fire but no one was hurt. Crews from Lewisburg, Fairlea, Frankfort, Ronceverte responded. Investigators say there was nothing suspicous about the fire, which did heavy damage, especially to the second floor of the home.
