Whitmer: 45 Cent Tax A Hardship

Governor Gretchen Whitmer says she knows a 45-cent per gallon increase in gasoline taxes will create a hardship for some.

At a town hall meeting in Portland on Saturday, she said that even though it will put a tremendous strain on some household budgets, the increase is needed due to 40 years of “disinvestment and failure” which has resulted in people paying for bad roads. The proposed hike has been met with opposition from lawmakers, though Republican Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey acknowledges new revenue will have to be raised somewhere to bring in the money needed to fix the state’s crumbling roads.
